A mug is a type of cup usually used for drinking hot beverages such as coffee, tea, hot cocoa and soups. Mugs have been in existence as far back as the 20th century with a type of mug known as Tiki mugs.
Mugs can be made from either of earthenware, bone china, porcelain or glass. The most popular types of mugs are ceramic and porcelain, which is actually a variant of ceramics. What stands porcelain mugs out is that they are made from a special kind of clay known as kaolin clay.
Mugs can also vary in type depending on the thickness of the clay and the temperature employed in the process of making them. Mugs are made with materials that have low thermal conductivity, meaning they were made to keep the temperature of the contents as constant as possible. The handle of a mug was also designed to keep hand contact with the cup at the barest minimum, hence you can hold a mug with a hot content and not be scalded or burnt. Mugs (with the exception of steel and glass mugs) can be used in the oven and microwave as well as also being dishwasher-safe.
